Zambia’s Debut at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair

An afternoon steeped in memory, image, and conversation.
Kupenta recently attended an intimate art talk reflecting on the journey of The Inherited Counter-Archive, a project that continues to open tender, necessary dialogues around photography, history, and lived experience. Hearing about the exhibition’s path, its encounters, and its afterlives was both grounding and inspiring, especially within a room alive with shared curiosity and care.

Hearing about how the exhibition travelled, how audiences engaged with it, and how its meanings continue to shift beyond the gallery was deeply insightful. The talk reminded us that archives are not fixed or distant, but shaped by care, context, and community. It was especially moving to witness how personal narratives and everyday moments can expand into collective memory, offering new ways of seeing both the past and the present.

We left the space feeling inspired by the intentional work being nurtured at Everyday Lusaka. Their commitment to dialogue, experimentation, and thoughtful storytelling is unmistakable. Kupenta is excited to follow what unfolds next and looks forward to future moments of exchange, collaboration, and shared imagining.
